But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (John 14:26 NKJV)
There are many misconceptions about the Holy Spirit. The third Person of the Trinity is not an it or a force. He is a person. And the Holy Spirit doesn’t make you do weird things. If you’re being weird, that’s on you.
To find out more about Him, let’s go to the source of truth – God’s Word, the Bible. Here are 10 things the Bible says about the Holy Spirit.
1. The Holy Spirit was there at the beginning of everything.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:1–2 NKJV)
2. The Holy Spirit came upon people in the Old Testament to empower them to do God’s work and speak His truth.
Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God: Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the Lord, He also has forsaken you.” (2 Chronicles 24:20 NKJV)
3. The Holy Spirit was there when John baptized Jesus.
When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:21–22 NKJV)
4. The Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead.
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. (Romans 8:11 NKJV)
5. The Holy Spirit convicts people of sin.
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. (John 16:8–11 NKJV)
6. The Holy Spirit lives inside born-again believers.
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? (1 Corinthians 6:19 NKJV)
7. The Holy Spirit empowers believers to do God’s work.
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. (Acts 1:8 NKJV)
8. The Holy Spirit helps us to bear spiritual fruit.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22–23a NKJV)
9. The Holy Spirit seals the believer.
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:13–14 NKJV)
10. You can grieve the Holy Spirit by sinning.
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. (Ephesians 4:30–31 NKJV)
Take time this week to meditate on these 10 things the Bible says about the Holy Spirit. The list is not exhaustive, but it’s a start toward learning about Him. Thank God that His Holy Spirit lives inside you and seals you. Think twice about intentionally doing something that you know would grieve Him. And praise God for His presence as you walk by faith with Him.
